We Stigmatize yet Need Awareness: Mental Health Day

We live in a society where 4 out every 10 people, suffers from Mental Disorder, Health or Illness. According to WHO – 80,000 people die every year due to untreated and unsupported mental health issues.

In 1992, the World Health Organization and World Federation of Mental Health declared to celebrate the mental health day to bring awareness and put a period over the stigma that pertains in our society. Every year on 10th of October, we celebrate this day to bring not just awareness but to come forth openly with the message of acceptance and support via different countries and cultures uniting over one purpose – Mental Health Support.

The importance of this day increased when social media became a platform to share vast stories. Somehow such important global days brought mass change in the thought process of many people and thus this is vastly discussed and many people step forward with their stories without fear every now and then.

Mental illness and health are two very different factors in one’s life. Health changes with time and Emotional support – You might feel good one day but the next day you might get aggressive or moody. The drastic shift in mood initially are the key symptoms of unstable mental health. Whereas, mental illness is often genetic or the worse form of untreated mental health. It is important how, without fear or stigmatizing our own self, we must always approach for help. People assume the fact that they might get judged or unaccepted. But choosing your own health over anything is far more important.

It has become a vast movement globally with tons of films and shows to neutralize mental health. Precious movies like Dear Zindagi, Tamasha, The Road Within and Silver Lining Playbook are few which boldly unfolded the common mental issues one faces and what it turns out as. Every movie, movement, experience or story ends with one word – ACCEPTANCE.

Many celebrities like, Lady Gaga, Deepika Padukone, Shaheen Bhatt, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Sophie Turner, Lizzo, Ellen, Leonardo DiCaprio, J.K Rowling, Brad Pitt, Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma, Miley Cyrus, Adam Levine, Jim Carrey and many more broke the silence one by one to contribute to remove the Stigma and make people understand how common it has become with the changing times. 

We are living in a society that is drastically changing from what it was yesterday. People are suffering in terms to adjust. From thought process to lifestyle, from relationship ease to complex diverse statements into relationship, from friendship to materialism, from goals to greed, from success to race, from love and responsibilities to judgments by those we care. Our societies have grown into the most terrible weapon that without a trigger is destroying millions of lives. It is not just difficult to accept but the state of confusion when we ourselves do not know what must be our next move.

We often compare ourselves to those via online modes viewing their stories of how happy and successful they are. The loop of comparison is endless. We can look up to someone for goals but comparing them has become such a common mindset that we neglect that it is hampering our mind and emotional stability.

What we see, is often not what we see – READ THAT AGAIN.

Almost every 8th person suffers from Anxiety, Moodiness, Anger, Suicide Thoughts in some rare worst cases and these are those finishing lines when you must get up and leave to ask for help. People are often mistaken with the fact that going for help will often get them on medications and the day to day lives would be disrupted. In fact, let’s be honest, amongst the celebrities who opened up with their issues, they not just suffered but shared the stories and bloomed much after accepting their internal issues. Societies in many parts of the countries are yet very narrow-minded with the fact to accept the drift in the mental and emotional cycle. We don’t have to let other’s accept it, WE have to ACCEPT IT. Our situation will resolve when we will LEARN and GROW because you cannot grow when you don’t know where you are lacking.
